Soundtracks

I always have a “soundtrack” when I’m writing a book, a collection of songs that fit the story.  Sometimes  it takes me a while to get the right music to go along with the idea in my head.  When I was writing Hunting Medusa, it took me forever to get the right music to go with the story, and then it finally clicked.  Sometimes, I have the music in mind when I sit down with an idea, but not always.

I got a cd recently as a gift that has music I love on it, so I’ve been listening to it a lot, but the music doesn’t really go with the stories I’m working on.  At least, not at the moment.  Probably for something else down the road, though.   Two of the songs in particular I can see fitting a story in my future.  None of the three manuscripts I’m currently writing, however.  They all have their own soundtracks already.

I have a friend who can’t work with music that has lyrics, as she finds it distracting.  My soundtracks tend to vary between instrumental and vocal songs.

How about you?  When you write, do you have a soundtrack for each story?
